Coach Celebrates Historic First Victory

Toowoomba Valleys Open Women’s Rugby League Coach Cameron Love along with his team of passionate players have created history winning their first match in the newly formed Toowoomba Rugby League competition winning 32 – 4 against Dalby last Saturday. Coach Love was extremely pleased with the result and credits his players drive and passion to work together as a team as the catalyst for the victory.

Coaches Report – “What a defensive improvement from Round 1. Line speed and communication were evident in a large majority of the game and it was only at points of exhaustion where this broke down. The match was played in light rain and the team adjusted to these conditions well. After a sloppy start to the match with both Valleys and Dalby knocking on early in the opening sets, we settled into our rhythm and our second set produced a repeat set from a line drop out and in our third set this lead to our initial points with a try to Mikaela Lankowski in the 5th minute, simple lateral movement of the ball out towards the right edge, conversion unsuccessful. The returning set lead to our second try with Tenesha Trunks weaving through the left edge to score a try with the conversion successful. The rest of the half we completed our sets well and forced two repeat sets and scored a try in the final minute of the half with Elle Bowden-Betts ducking under the defence from dummy half. Dalby 0, Valleys 16 at half time.

The second half began with a successful kick-off and Valleys regained the ball after it went into touch. For the next four minutes Valley’s and Dalby traded sets but importantly the ball never left our attacking half. In the 34th minute a quick scoot from dummy half led to Hannah Purvis getting a try. Valleys maintained possession from the kickoff and again a scoot from dummy half in the 39th minute led to a try, this time to Jasmine Gray. Valleys and Dalby traded sets until a knock on and then penalty from illegal strip by Valleys in the 50 minute lead to Dalby’s first points with their #10 Tyrah Tompson powering over the line. We again regained possession from the kick off and from the scrum Tenesha Trunks was able to split the defence and then successfully convert her own try in the 51st minute. The final 10 minutes were predominantly spent in our half, we kept Dalby out whilst also completing most of our attacking sets. Final score Dalby 4 Valleys 34″.

Was very hard to pick just one for Player of the Match as there were many players who were worthy of it. Tenesha Trunks, 4 tackles, 7 hit ups, 4 line breaks 2 tries and 4/6 conversions. Janet Morofa, 11 tackles, 8 hit ups and 2 line breaks. Elle Bowden Betts 12 tackles, 10 hit ups and 2 line breaks and 1 try, Mikaela Lankowski, 10 tackles and 5 hit ups. Kendal Lane, 13 tackles and 7 hit ups. Jasmine Gray, 7 tackles, 14 hit ups and 1 try.  Hannah Purvis 6 tackles 2 hit ups and 1 try.

Coaches Player of the Match: Janet Morofa.

Congratulations Team!!!
