A Grade Vs Wattles Match Report 12.07.14

The Toowoomba Valleys A grade put in a gutsy performance against Wattles away before going down 25-12.
The match was locked at 12 all for most of the second half before Wattles converted a field goal and ran in 2 late tries through some really tired defence. The fatigue late in the game was understandable as we were forced constantly to defend multiple sets from some very poor and frankly not up to standard refereeing which had both coaches extremely frustrated after the match.
Our forwards worked the house down in a really tough and tense match where we showed at our best we can compete with the top sides. To hold Wattles and their attacking weapons to 2 tries for 70 minutes was a great effort but one we simply couldn’t sustain to the end given the amount of sets we had to defend. Sam Capewell was awarded the player’s player and his performance with 2 of our usual front row rotation out was phenominal. Our young bench really stood up too with Jason Sharpe, Nulla Budden, Trazan Rihia and Josh Birch (all under 20) really making an impact. It was really great to see Josh Birch back too after a long layoff with injury.
We now face a situation where we must win our last 4 games and other results need to go in our favour to make the finals. Despite this, the last 2 months has seen the side really improve as we’ve gotten to know each other’s game and winning 5 of our last 7 and having the 2nd best defensive record in the comp is a great effort and achievment for a side in our spot on the ladder. If we can scrape into the finals i am certain that we will make it very hard for whatever opponents we face.
