A grade vs brothers match report 01.06.14

The Toowoomba Valleys Roosters A Grade team is proudly sponsored by Clive Berghofer, The Hogs Breath Cafe, Telstra Store Clifford Gardens and the Federal Hotel.
The Valleys A grade finished the first round of fixtures with a solid 34-6 win over Brothers away from home.
In a bit of a dour match, which was slowed up enormously by the officiating, it was really tough to get into a rhythm with the football. In the end the match turned into basically an 80 minute defensive effort for us where we were forced to tackle multiple sets of defence in a row on a number of occasions. In that respect it was a great effort by the boys to tackle constantly and not fold or let in soft tries despite the fatigue they were under. That attitude to our defence has slowly returned over the last few weeks and that is something that is vital that we continue after the weekend off.
Hugh Sedger returned to some great form, especially defensively and was awarded the players’ player for the match. In the middle Luke Smith was exceptional in his work rate and Darren Schwerin, who started at fullback before playing the final 30mins at hooker was superb in his effort and enthusiasm throughout the whole match. Another player worth mentioning was Alex Antonio in the middle of the park. Alex is new to us this year and has come from Rugby Union but in this his first year of Rugby league has picked up the game amazingly quickly and his ball running was a particular highlight in this game.
We will certainly be enjoying the break now and really knuckling down when we get back with a vital away game at Highfields first on the agenda.
