The Toowoomba Valleys Roosters A Grade is proudly sponsored by Clive Berghofer, The Hogs Breath Cafe, Telstra Store Clifford Gardens, and the Federal Hotel/Motel. The Valleys Roosters A grade travelled to Pittsworth for round 2 and suffered an incredibly dissappointing loss that really hurt 28-22.
It was extremely frustrating to watch a team who just one week before produced so many positives across 80mins, now produce such a poor display.
After leading 16-0 early in the second half we completely let ourselves down defensively and gifted away an important early 2 points. In hindsight the writing was on the wall early when despite leading and looking comfortable we were really poor in our ball discipline in the greasy conditions.
To Pittsworth’s credit they kept grinding away at us and obviously never lost belief that they could get back in the game. They are a team who keeps coming no matter what and their mental toughness is something we need to try to emulate. Unfortunately for us we came across them on a night where our attitude to all parts of our game was sub standard and that’s just never going to be good enough against an honest hardworking side.
Willie Preston was the pick of our forwards in a night with not many positives. In defence he was one of the few that could hold his head high. Luke Smith was one of the others who tried all night and there was one final positive in seeing Rian Cherry make his return after a couple of years away from footy and score a good try. With a few more games under his belt he’ll be a valuable pick up for us.
Luckily it is only game 2 of the season and with a young squad we expect inconsistencies but another performance with that poor attitude towards ball control and defence would be really worrying. We now go back home and face Souths fresh off a great result against Gatton and we’ll be looking for a performance that gets back to the standards we want and puts last week’s game well and truly behind us. The statement we make in this game will speak volumes about what we want to do this year.
