The Toowoomba Valleys A Grade kept our finals hopes alive with a dramatic late win at Warwick 30-28.
The effort to come home from 12 points down with 10mins to go and only 12 men on the field from an earlier send off was sensational and proves that the players’ still want to be there come finals in 3 weeks time. The result and the fashion it happened in, caused some good celebrations after the match however we will have to be careful that those emotions following the win don’t overshadow some of the poor football we played for 65 minutes of the match. We will need some big improvements to win all 3 final games and have a shot at playing finals football.
Early on we struggled to find the enthusiasm that we have sustained over the last 2 months, especially in defense and this was evident in our lack of control of the ruck area and some soft tries being conceded. We trailed all match and to come home and fight to the end for the result on a night where we were far from our best was really satisfying.
Luke Smith was named players’ player and was terrific all night in defense and attack and backed up well in the middle by Bryce Denman and Jason Sharpe in particular. Ryan Stevens again played a big hand for us at halfback and his decisive run and pass to put Blake Edwards into space for the match tieing try with 1 minute remaining was an incredible play. Ryan then calmly slotted the winning 2 points from wide out to keep our hopes alive and cause the loudest victory song i’ve heard in my time at Valleys.
We now go back home for the 1st time in over a month and face a very tough Dalby side in another must win match. 3 games remain and we have to win them all and still rely on other results but this last performance proved that we are going to give it everything we’ve got to get there.
