The Valleys Roosters A Grade were outclassed in a high scoring match 42-30 by Souths on Sunday at home. In a game where both teams struggled to hold the other out for 1 set on their goal line it was Souths who started better and got themselves out to a 16-0 lead. To the credit of our boys they slowly clawed their way back to be down 20-18 at halftime but in reality we never really looked like getting on top on the day. Souths speed and outside backs did most of the damage and they are a dangerous side if given room, so it was no surprise to see such a large scoreline given our committment to defence at the moment. Darren Schwerin saved us on many occassions in defence with some of the only positive and aggresive defence from the wing. It was largely his efforts that had us in a reasonable position for the start of the 2nd half. Ryan Stevens played one of his most mature and skillful games in the top grade despite carrying niggling injuries and rightly so, won the players player award. Ryan’s progression as a half is one positive from the match and we’re hoping he can get over those niggles so he can improve even more. We now face Gatton and the task of digging ourselves out of the early hole we have made for ourselves gets even harder. It is early days in the comp and we are remaining positive but we certainly need to improve in many areas to be competitive this year.
