match report Under 18’s semi final Vs Souths 10/08/13

The Steggles Chickens, Construction Siteworks and Thiess Services Valleys U-18’s took on Souths on Saturday. The first of our finals campaign was an extremely tough game. We started very well, completing sets, defending strong and off the back of that it wasn’t long till we crossed the line. Big Benny Atkins played a very strong hand at the start if the game. His go forward was hard for their defence to stop and he set up Jason Sharpe and Hnaloan Budden to speed up the ruck which gave us good momentum for Hancock to work our game plan. We fought well and when we completed sets we scored points. On the rare occasion that we made an error Souths really up’d the pressure on us and came up with a try of their own. At half time we were up 16-6. It didn’t last long though. A few errors and poor discipline gave Souths much of the ball over the 2nd half. As they are a good team, giving them so much ball was only going to lead to points for them. They caught our lead then over took it and then the lead changed 3 times over the course of the half. And to make things worse we lost one of our star fowards, Richard Ryan to a dislocated shoulder. There was some desperate cover defence from Mitch Matheson, and a few try savers from Josh Robinson which gave us a lot of belief. When we finally had some time with the ball we scored twice and sealed the game 26-24. We were lucky. The poor attitude we showed in the 2nd half was not good enough at finals time.  We will be working hard at getting things right this week and getting ready for whatever Highfields can throw at us.
