Round 5 Valleys v Oakey at Oakey, 14th April, 2013

Clive Berghofer Land Sales, Fabtech Liners & Covers and Federal Hotel Valleys A-Grade v Oakey at Oakey, 14th April, 2013

Our  Clive Berghofer Land Sales, Fabtech Liners & Covers and Federal Hotel Valleys A-Grade scored an important and convincing victory out at Oakey last Sunday, running in ten tries and finishing the match off 48 – 18. The 2 points were important for us due to an inconsistent start to the season and a tough run of games over the next month. We are still a long way from playing the football we want to however but each week we are taking small steps forward which is encouraging. Once again some great footy was partnered with cheap and impatient errors and this is the big area we must improve on if we want to get results against the top teams in the next few games. Vaea La’akulu was called in late due to an injury in the centres and played a huge role in the win, scoring 3 tries and breaking the line constantly during the match in a great performance. In the middle, big Simon Mapapalangi busted the line several times with huge carries but unfortunately picked up an injury late in the match which we are hoping is not severe. Centre Matt Hawkins also picked up a pretty bad ankle injury in scoring a try which looks like meaning we will also be without him for a while so the win did come at a cost. Tyrone Jowett played another great game also and keeps getting better and better with each week and Luke Smith, up against his former club, was outstanding in the middle of the park. Luke’s performance was highlighted by a break and the start of probably our best attacking try of the season as well which was great to watch. Our depth will be tested with injury and absences in the next few weeks but when one door closes another opens for some fringe players and our younger crew back from Clydesdales duties. There will be a good opportunity for some players to really stand up against quality teams which will start Sunday when we return back home for the first time in a month to host a very good Souths team
