Nanango Venue Provides Excellent Atmosphere

The Nanango RLFC football grounds have provided an excellent atmosphere for the recent Toowoomba Valleys RLFC Vs Newtown RLFC TRL fixture match. The match was won by Valleys 48 – 6 but was played in great spirit in front of a large and very vocal local crowd. This was an exercise initiated by Toowoomba Valleys to provide support and show appreciation for the efforts of the district for a number of years now. The resulting financial success of the day is best highlighted by the Nanango RLFC President, Rebecca Jackson with the following letter of thanks…

“As most would be aware the ties the South Burnett have with Newtown and the link between the Nanango Stags and the Valleys Roosters. When Valleys President Gary de Joux contacted me at the start of the season with this idea I couldn’t say yes fast enough. Personally, it was going to be fantastic for myself and my family to only go 5 mins to watch my husband play for the Roosters, but for the club he was going to be our draw crowd. Nanango is known for large vocal crowds but player Drew Jackson was going to bring people to our club that don’t normally come and that is what did happen. The Nanango crowd did not disappoint and put on a display that the Valleys boys are still talking about. The Stags struggled through Covid as most have done. We did not expect it and had racked up huge debts. We fundraised as much as we could last year however it was still not enough. The Nanango Stags started this season with under $1000 in our bank account and owing $10,000 in debts. The committee knew this year was going to be extremely hard. During the off season the five South Burnett presidents worked hard to come up with a plan for our season and decided to do something we had never done. We were to play all grades from all clubs at one venue on one day. This would give each club 4 home games. It would be a long hard day on our volunteers however the financial outcome was going to be what was needed. It was also going to get the kids back to rugby league after a year off. We hosted the first day of the season and knew the hard work was going to be a massive benefit to our club.
It took a lot of planning with Gary and teams from the TRL who would travel to Nanango to play. Valleys knew they would have to give up a profitable home game to travel. After talking with a number of clubs I suggested we approach Newtown. The South Burnett under 15, 16 and 18’s help Newtown out with teams in those age groups. This is something that has be helpful for both clubs as we didn’t have enough players out in the south Burnett to hold these age group competitions. Newtown came on board, the TRL approved it and it was then to just wait till August 21st. For those who attended, the day did not disappoint.
The Nanango Stags RLFC Old Boys showed up to support the current team who were facing off arch rivals Kingaroy. The Nanango Stags put on a try scoring show that was just as good as the Valleys A Grade.
Nanango RLFC have worked hard throughout the year and have paid all our debts and have a good amount in the bank. These games held at Nanango have made our club more money than we could have imagined. We can not thank Valleys and Newtown enough for what they have done for our club. We are set to go into next season with money to improve our grounds. Maybe look at new Jersey’s that are five years old however didn’t have the money to even look at buying new ones. Buy a new scoreboard as we have been borrowing other clubs for half the season, fix major electrical issues and upgrade appliances in our canteen.
I do really hope that the South Burnett and the TRL can continue this friendship long term.
Thanks again to Valleys, Newtown, TRL, South Burnett Rugby League, the referees, Kingaroy Red Ants, Murgon Mustangs, Cherbourg Hornets, Dalby Junior Rugby League, the players, team officials and lastly the Nanango Stags band of volunteers who worked in every aspect of the club leading up to the day, during the day and in the clean up!
UP THE STAGS!!!
