Round 9 Valleys v Highfields at Herb Steinohrt Oval, 4th May 2013
Clive Berghofer Land Sales, Fabtech Liners & Covers and Federal Hotel Valleys A-Grade v Gatton at Herb Steinohrt Oval, 4th May, 2013
Our Clive Berghofer Land Sales, Fabtech Liners & Covers and Federal Hotel Valleys A-Grade side put on its most disciplined and enthusiastic performance of the seasson at home on saturday night to beat the in form Gatton Hawks 33 – 22. With our big list of injuries and several players toughing out injuries that would normally rule them out the win was a great display of mental toughness and attitude. For the first time of the season we executed a game plan to the letter and showed patience to complete sets and build pressure. Gatton are a big, tough and skillfull team so the defensive effort was also enormous in keeping them to only one try in the second half. Our defence has found a bit of passion and desire to work hard for each other in the last two weeks and this is something we must keep and build on if we hope to succeed this year. Some great tries were scored on the night in a really entertaining match. Young Kahaara Waaka continued his try scoring run since coming into A-Grade with 3 great tries and he was serviced well by his centre Huey Sedger who is growing each week in belief. Jay Melrose was back to some good form also in picking up 2 great tries. Gus Mackellar played through pain and his calm, experienced footy and decision making were a key factor. But it was in the forwards where the battle was won and full credit must go to our boys who used their lack of size against a monster pack to their advantage with some quick and skilful footy around the ruck. Luke Smith caused the big guys problems all night with his skill and smart running and Blake Edwards was sensational in his go forward all night. A last mention must go to Oliver Scott who in just his 2nd game back played 80 minutes in the back row and was a vital player for us on the night. It’s great to see Oli back. We’ll be looking to take advantage of the week off now to recover from our bad run of injuries and hopefully the break won’t break the momentum we’ve worked hard to finally find.
