A Grade Match Report Vs Highfields 22.03.14

The Toowoomba Valleys Roosters A Grade is proudly sponsored by Clive Berghofer, The Hogs Breath Cafe, Telstra Store Clifford Gardens, and the Federal Hotel/Motel. The Valleys Roosters A grade started the 2014 TRL season in positive fashion on Saturday night with a solid and physical win, 44 – 18 over Highfields.

A first half where we made very few errors was exactly what we needed to get some cohesion in our attack. It was pleasing to rack up some points with the limited time we’ve had to spend developing our attack in the preseason. Ryan Stevens and Jake Capewell were instrumental in guiding us around and their decision making was very encouraging early in the year. Despite plenty of positives, we were still disappointed however with giving up 2 soft tries in the 2nd half and that is an area we’ll be working hard to improve on.

In our middle it was great to see our new front row combination of Bryce Denman and Sam Capewell working together. 2 very different prop forwards who give us some great variation in our go forward and sure up our middle defensively.

Several players made their debuts either in A grade or for the club, which is always exciting. Fullback James Dempsey was awarded the players player in a great performance on his A grade debut. James is a class player that has come through our juniors and we’re all really excited about seeing him progress this year. Bryce Denman, Jaye Steer and Ziggy Ashsee all made their Valleys debuts also and showed us that they will each be key recruits this year for our squad.

We now face a tough away game at Pittsworth. There are a couple of injury concerns going into this one and we’ll need also to improve on some key areas if we want to get the 2 points. However we will go out there confident after a pretty pleasing first hit out overall.
